The Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Botswana would like to inform that on August 17, 2008 the Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre artists visited Botswana with their spectacular show “Iolanta”.
Great Russian composer Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky wrote his opera “Iolanta” in 1892, having already composed a mass of unique works in virtually all genres of music. “Iolanta” represents the unprecedented wealth of freely flowing melody in
peaceful, submissive vein, very joyful and solemn. Finally, after 116 years “Iolanta” premiered on the African Continent and this historic event was celebrated in Botswana.
The Ekaterinburg State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre is one of the oldest and best known theatres in Russia. This theatre is known for the traditional and classical productions and it was opened in 1912. The theatre had cultural communications with Italy, Germany, USA, United Kingdom, Korea and others. And now the sixty five members of the Opera and Orchestra companies prepared the very special programme for Botswana.
The show on the August 17 was attended by the Botswana Defence Force Commander Mr. Tebogo Carter Masire, H.E. Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Botswana Mr. Anatoly Korsun, members of diplomatic corps, businessmen
and other dignitaries.
This memorable event has definitely contributed to the development of the Russia-Botswana cultural ties and afforded the art lovers in Botswana the unique opportunity to admire the beauty of the Russian opera.
